KTM – A mother’s awareness and prompt response has been a reason behind the prevention of a bid for a child marriage of her own daughter at Thaha Municipality-4 in Makwanpur. The case is the first-ever recorded event in the district that the attempt for an early marriage was foiled due to mother’s initiation.
Phoolmaya Ting, 50, of Narayanjhyau of Thaha Municipality came to know that a 20-year-old boy of another village had cajoled her 14-year-old daughter to run away with him. As she knew this overture, she took no time to telephone ward Chair Deepak Singh Lama.
Once the people’s representative was made aware of the attempt of child marriage which is banned by the law, he informed about it to the Social Development Ministry in the State. The Ministry promptly responded to the event and the plan was finally aborted.
A team comprising child-marriage free Bagmati state campaign’s facilitator Pabina Lama, CIWIN child helpline Hetauda chief Jhabindra Gyawali, ward Chair Lama, Thaha Municipality’s women and children section chief Pratima Lama, ward secretary Palsang Lama, and Lekali Basifant Secondary School’s Chair Binod Lama reached the boy’s village and convinced him to give up the plan.RSS
