KTM – The number of women giving child birth in medical centre has increased, with the establishment of birthing centres in the district. There are a total of 52 birthing centres.

The percentage of expecting mothers delivering at the health centres has increased by 73 per cent, according to the District Health Office. This has also brought down the maternal and infant mortality rate, said chief of the office, Ramesh Malasi.

Even women in the remote Ghaghal and Bogatan area of the district are coming to the health centres for delivery, said chairperson of the District Hospital, Doti Yagya Raj Joshi.

Meanwhile, public health inspector at the Shikhar municipality Harish Shah said attention should be paid to infrastructure development of the health centres rather than only beginning maternity services.
